Steffi Laier Remains Fastest Women Motocrosser in the World
- Steffi Laier from Delheim, Germany, came back to the states to race the WML International Championship and WML Hangtown National once again proving her dominance in the women’s professional field. In moto one, the KTM rider went down in the first corner with Kaide Garret (Yam), while Jessica Patterson (Kaw) and Stefy Bau' (Hon) battled for the lead. Bau got around the re-injured Patterson (who hurt her ACL in the 125cc B race the day before). Laier systematically made her way to the front of the pack with a substantial lead at the end, but not before a little contact over a jump with the surprised Bau (who was unaware of how quickly Laier was gaining). In moto two, Laier ran a flawless race, picking up the LA/Sleeve Pro –X Holeshot money. Patterson took 2nd and Stefy Bau' took third. The WML 2001 National Champion, Tania Satchwell (Yam), had a spectacular crash on the new downhill double section, braking off her throttle, while her AGP Racing teammate, Sarah Whitmore picked up a third overall. Riders from 5 different countries made up the top 5. ESPN filmed highlights of the women’s pro racing for the regular television coverage of the AMA/Chevy Trucks Motocross Championships, scheduled to air Saturday, May 25, 6:00PM Eastern/3:00PM Pacific on espn2. In addition, High Octane Sports (Fox Sport Network) filmed the women for an upcoming segment on their show and a photographer assigned to shoot a pictorial for Sports Illustrated for Women was busy shooting.
