Arlanda, Sweden
September 29, 2001
The
promoters of this once a year event had hoped for 15 female racers to attend the
championship. As the registrations closed and the girls headed for the
starting line, 21 participants lined up ready to race in Arlanda this
year. This was a new record for female motocross competition in Sweden.
Riders experience varied from 2 months to 15 years - would a boy compete after
only 2 months of practice?
Talk in
the pits before moto 1 was about who would be on the podium later that
day. Most of the participants had an idea about who this would
be. The two top female competitors in Sweden during the past few
years were Elin Mann and Johanna Mattsson. On this day, Elin and Johanna
had a fight for first place in moto 1 with Johanna taking first place at the
checkered in front of Elin. As the competition continued in moto 2, the
tables turned as Elin won with Johanna taking second, creating a two way
tie. The best second moto finish are the tie breakers, giving Elin the
overall and the title this year as she took home the trophy. It was Marie
Karlsson bringing in third place with Sandra Axell and Jessica Jönsson rounding
off the fourth and fifth place positions.
